It's all over now...

about

This is the first official full-length album of The Sevenate, released and distributed nationally and internationally by Cyclone Records / Sonic Unyon Distribution.

I wanted to go back to my roots with this album. Write and record songs that would reflect every facet of what I like without censoring myself. Funny as it may sound, In the 90's through the Talamasca days, I would often think: "this is too commercial, too pop" and would censor this side of my songwriting abilities. I always loved great catchy choruses, pop hooks and melody. I was a Beatles fan, Kiss fan, and even Michael Jackson!! (AAAARGH! SACRILEGE!) Most everything I recorded in the 90's had to be "underground", "alternative"; but in private I continued to write all sorts of songs without any borders or limits. From classical sonatas, to Chanson Francaise, to blues, jazz, pop, Goth, electronica, metal, ambient, Hardcore, Drum & Bass, punk, industrial, hard rock, singer/songwriter folk, ballads, disco, classic rock, glam... So with this album I went back to my teenage loves and mixed it up. A great example is "Sister Jezebelle"; this song starts with a melodic goth tinged chorus, followed by a glam verse, a metal pre-chorus with pop back up vocals, then a hard rock bridge that I took from an old song of mine "Turn Around" by Love. You can check it out on this website... "Sister Jez" is a true hybrid kind of song but somehow it works really well! So this album has very catchy choruses, pop hooks, powerful riffs and sounds, a great power ballad with strings and piano, and lots of variety, yet it all sounds cohesive. Sound wise, I went back to a classic rock band formula, with real instruments, no electronic drums, no sampling, no tricks: Everything was played by humans. Some very talented humans too! Manny did all the drums in about 5 sessions and this album is a great testimony to his powerhouse drumming talent. This guy is one of the top drummers in Toronto right now. He drums ahead of the beat, giving the songs a sense of urgency and excitement. He is technical and yet he hits hard like Bonham used to. His snare snaps aggressively, interwoven with hat flourishes and juicy parts that truly adds a musicality to the rhythm section. Hem's voice and guitars truly complement mine perfectly. The Sevenate's choruses are all dependent upon his artistry. I especially liked all sorts of details that maybe one wouldn't notice without knowing; things like the acoustic guitar part in "Coming To", the amazing guitar solo in "Be All We Can't Be" the perfectly tight tambourine part and the backing vocals in the chorus of that same song... Great stuff! Another Highlight of the "Revolve" recording sessions for me, was the gorgeous cello parts recorded by Liza McLelland on "It All Revolves Around You", and "Coming To". "Revolve" is an album that I am extremely proud of. All the songs are strong, absolutely no fillers on this album. I believe this album can hold its own side by side with some of the best rock albums of all time, both for its powerful sound and for its collection of amazing songs...
Enjoy!
